The John Martin Heritage Festival

Industrial Archaeology at Langley with Robert Forsythe

14 May 2011 10am-4pm

The Garden Station

An enthusiastic group joined Robert Forsythe in examining local industries at the turn of the 19th century which may have influenced John Martin in his childhood. Based at the Garden Station, Langley, it was ideally placed to explore the hidden heritage of this once bustling site, including visits to Langley Barony fireclay works, Langley smelt mill, and a walk along the flues which once carried the mill's noxious fumes to Stublick Chimney high on the North Pennine moors.
